Today my dad preached on Psalm 84:1-4. It was so good! One of the things I love when Daddy preaches is that he regularly uses an outline. I thought I might share with you the outline. Here it is:
Introduction to Psalm 84
1. Title - A Psalm to, by or for the Sons of Korah
2. Three sections, divided by Selah = musical term:
The pilgrim's delight (thirst, hunger, aspiration) (verses 1-4)
The pilgrim's progress (verses 5-8)
The pilgrim's reward (verses 9-11)
3. Common theme: worship in the Tabernacle or Temple
4. Three possible levels of interpretation/application:
Temple in Jerusalem
The Christian life - Sanctification
Heaven - our goal and destination
The Pilgrim's Delight (vv.1-4)
A. The expressions of his delight
The Intensity of his delight
Similar expressions in Psalm 63:1 and Psalm 42:1-4 ( I highly recommend that you read these passages.)
His delight was shameless
The illustration of his delight - birds nesting in the temple
A nest is a place of:
Security and shelter from danger
Rest
Provision
Fellowship with loved ones
B. The focus of his thoughts
Dwelling places (from there he went to) alters (and then to) the Living God Himself
C. The Motivation of His Delight
Two altars in the temple:
1. The altar of sacrifice. Two points of connection between the worshiper and the animal:
The sin of the worshiper
The death of the animal
God now meets with sinners at the cross. It is the only place God will meet with sinners now. The altar of sacrifice represents the work of Christ.
2. The altar of incense represents the worship of the person of Christ.
D. The Blessing of His Delight (verse 4)
Selah
Now, I am going to leave you with that for now. I hope to come back and finish the sermon notes tomorrow. But, I need to go because 1. My shoulders are hurting from looking down at this computer. 2. My battery is running out. 3. It's almost 11:00 pm and 4. My Mom might be about to go to bed (Dad's already in bed) and I really liked to be tucked into bed by one of my parents. So, ta ta for now!
